Both Are Wall Finishes, But Not the Same Choice
Distemper and emulsion are both used on interior walls, but they suit different expectations. Distemper is often considered for economical finishing. Emulsion is generally selected when a smoother look, better finish quality and stronger overall performance are desired.
When Distemper Makes Sense
Distemper can be useful for cost-sensitive interiors, rental updates, temporary spaces or areas where the finish requirement is simple. It provides colour coverage but may not deliver the same richness, durability or washability expected from modern emulsions.
When Emulsion Is Better
Interior emulsion is usually preferred for main living spaces, bedrooms and modern homes where appearance and maintenance matter. Emulsion paints can offer a more refined surface and broader finish options depending on the product selected.
Surface Preparation Still Matters
Neither product can fully compensate for poor preparation. Putty, primer and proper drying time help the final finish look better and last longer.
